When people learn how well I’m handling health and aging, they frequently ask about my views on alcohol consumption.
In the past few years, we have seen so many new alcohol-based drinks introduced in the marketplace, it’s worth a look at the pros and cons:
To start with, alcohol is a Neurotoxin. A neurotoxin negatively affects the nervous system and nerve cells, potentially causing long-term damage…not just to the brain, but to the immune system, the skeletal system, the reproductive system, the circulatory system, the digestive system, the central nervous system and the excretory system.
Now the good news …
Heavy drinking is a bad idea…no question, but moderate alcohol consumption (2 drinks or less in a day for men or 1 drink or less in a day for women) could cause zero health threats and could even be good for you, according to medical authorities.
But wait… there is a school of respected science contending that alcohol consumption at any level has no health benefits.
We used to have a glass of red wine with our dinner …every night. Now we only have a glass of sparkling wine when we have friends over for “happy hour”…maybe once a month.
My thoughts: If you don’t drink now there’s no good reason to start. If you are a moderate drinker now and a drink makes you feel good …no good reason to change.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
