The magic of the placebo effect

You may have benefited from a placebo prescribed by your doctor …and not know it. More than half of doctors (surveyed) offer fake prescriptions to make patients feel better — and that’s OK, most doctors say. No need to feel deceived though. If the treatment worked, the doctor has done her job …right?

The placebo effect is not deception, fluke, experimenter bias or statistical anomaly. It is, instead, a product of expectation. The human brain anticipates outcomes, and anticipation produces those outcomes. The placebo effect is self-fulfilling prophecy, and it follows the patterns you’d predict if the brain were, indeed, producing its own desired outcomes.”

The placebo effect offers real proof that we can and do influence our health and wellbeing through our thoughts and beliefs. If we could learn to do a better job of focusing on our desired health, we would enjoy a much better level of health …right?

Dr. Joe Dispenza is a leading expert in the area of self health management. His ground breaking book, “You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter” was first published in 2015.

The book ends with a “how-to” meditation for changing beliefs and perceptions that hold us back from being our best, healthiest selves. It’s about 45 minutes long. Dr. Joe emphasizes meditation as the most powerful change tool we have.
